After being interested in photography for a long time, and probably most importantly wanting to document our time with our new baby (not knowing how long Kathleen would have with our son) we bought a beginner DSLR. Like most parents who buy a camera to take photos of their kids, we didn't take the time to learn about photography and the camera sat mostly unused. Sure, occasionally we got lucky and got shots we thought were great, but we still didn't learn how to properly use a camera and weren't getting the great photos we expected.
Eventually, Kathleen asked to be a 2nd shooter/shadow her amazing photographer cousin while doing a photo shoot of her sister and niece. Now she actually started learning and practicing in earnest. The session with her cousin never happened because, life, but Kathleen started to get the foundation of photography and really enjoyed it. Spencer on the other hand only tolerated it, lol!
We were invited to a friend's murder mystery party (check out Mingle and Mischief murder mysteries! They even have virtual parties to play over zoom during lockdown or for long distance friends) and Kathleen was assigned a photo journalist character. She took it to the next level by making it her mission to document the party. Afterwards, everyone was thrilled with the photos, and we thought they could be better with a nicer camera. In order to justify buying a new camera when the previous one wasn't used very much, we decided to get serious about learning photography, being consistent, and try to make a side business of it.
MK Sutton Photography Was Born
We wanted something we could do together, and Mike was between jobs as a videographer, so we came up with our idea to share responsibilities in the business. With Mike's extensive background in video, he was more comfortable operating the camera, while Kathleen had done all of the classes and education on posing, editing etc. so it was decided that Mike would operate the camera while Kathleen gave families the directions and prompts during the session. We tried our all the different genres of sessions but didn't really find what we were looking for, it wasn't feeding the creativity and purpose we wanted out of our business. We enjoyed doing couples photography, but had no interest in doing weddings which makes couple photography pretty limited.
After doing families, maternity, mini sessions, lifestyle, and headshots- Kathleen asked her best friend if she could try out Boudoir for her and immediately fell in love. It was so empowering, for both us and the client. It was out of the box and creative. We got to help someone feel beautiful and confident in their own skin and it was so rewarding. At the same time as discovering a love for boudoir we made a major decision and decided to move across the country. It was a perfect opportunity to re-brand and focus on what we really wanted to do with our business. We could not be more excited for this new chapter in our lives, both here in Tennessee and in Boudoir!
Yep, that's me- Kathleen! I thought my bestie might be more comfortable if I was in my skivvies too.
Eventually I handed her my camera and she took a few photos for me :)
